our next lesson from module G is memory learning by Miss Nurul Infaza Talalah binti Ramli .

Overview
  • understanding memory processes
  • memory strategies
  • understanding concentration
  • strategies for improving concentration
  • reading / study system (SQ3R)

What is memory ?
memory is the ability to remember something important for everyday life . As example computer software

What is brain ?
brain is organ for human . As example computer hardware

Brain is one of largest and most complex organ in the human body .

There are many types of memory :
  • Sensory Memory                                                                                                                           the shortest-term element of memory. It is the ability to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimuli have ended . Using senses such as hearing , smell , sight , taste and touch .
  •  Short - term Memory                                                                                                           acts as a kind of “scratch-pad” for temporary recall of the information which is being processed at any point in time . STM is a memory that allows human beings to memorize in a short time .
  • Long - term Memory                                                                                                             intended for storage of information over a long period of time. Despite our everyday impressions of forgetting. you may remember the things in a long time because you keep repeat the sentence .
Why we forget things easily
  • Distraction - from our friend who wants to gossiping or chatting with us when lecturer teaching . from our own phones , we keep replying messages from others or groups .
  •  Focus - as a students we must avoid sitting at the back because if we sit at back we cannot focus in the class .
  • Time Factor - many students cannot divide their time properly , so you must make a reminder or planner like what we already learn in our last lesson . Sir Fariz also suggest us to make a big calendar and write down the important dates in the calendar such as our test , topic and final exam .

Now , I want to share how to get an effective memory

How to improve your memory
Massed Practice vs Spaced Practice
  • Massed Practice - showing someone who often memorizes something continuously without rest . This practice is strongly discouraged
  • Spaced Practice - showing someone who continuously memorizes but there is a break and time interval . This practice is highly recommended .
Break Reading Material Down ( again no cramming ) for Some Period of Time
    • Student just read 2 chapter a day and don't try reading all the chapter in a day . you will be tired and you cannot memorize all the chapter .
    Rehearsal
    • you may practice the topic until you remembered it and understand the topic
    • you can repeat reading the topic
    Elaboration Strategies
    • Acronyms / catchwords                                                                                                                   e.g : UIA - Universiti Islam Antarabangsa                                                                                               btw - by the way
    • Acrostics / catchphrases                                                                                                                  e.g. :

    Mnemonics

    • Memory Tricks
    • Make it interesting to read
    • Example : My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos                                                                       ( Mercury , Venus , Earth , Mars , Jupiter , Saturn , Uranus , Neptune )
      Causes of Poor Concentration
    • Lack of attention - in the lecturer hall you must sit in front or center to get more attention in class
    • Lack of interest - student must choose the subject that he/she likes . Do not follow your friends because our interest is different
    • Lack of motivation - if you confuse on what course that you want to take , please ask your counselor and ask their advice based on your results , interest and ambition .
    • Distraction from others - try to find friends who can avoid chatting while lecturer give their talk and turn off your phone when you in the lecturer hall .
    • Uncomfortable environment - find places that can make you comfortable .
    • Physiological matters - illness and tiredness . you must get enough rest and sleep .
    • Physiological matters - personal problems , worries and anxiety . Please find someone that you trust and share problem with her .
    What is SQ3R ?
    SQ3R stand for Survey , Question , Read , Recite , Review .
    • Survey - as an excellent student , you must make a survey on the next lesson .
    • Question - you can make a question based on what you read .
    • Read  - read the topic and try to find the answer for the question .
    • Recite - make your own simple notes , try to memorize the notes that you do , do an exercise .
    • Review - make a revision , look back the notes if you forget the notes and if you have more times you can make a flashcard each topic .
At the end of this topic , I want to share some games that good for your mind .
